What does it take to build an effective stance for Jiu Jitsu?
Today I'm starting a new series where I take you from complete beginner all the way to basic competency on the feet for Jiu Jitsu (this series can be applied to Gi or No Gi). It all starts with a good stance.
What's more, it doesn't take long to create an effective stance (video length 4:11), but if you're really strapped for time, checkout the second video on this page where I walk you through an A+ Jiu Jitsu stance checklist in under 1 minute.
2. No excuses - build a timeless stance in a minute
We could all use a little more time in life... I highly advise you watch the first video soon, but if you're strapped for time and are looking for the absolute essentials of a wrestling-based stance for BJJ, here it is my friend.
3. Fakes & Feints
Get an immediate advantage on your opponent by utilizing the lead hand fake.
After learning to build an effective stance the next step towards developing your standing game is learning to use your hands. Through years of observation, experimentation, and implementation I've uncovered a true cheat code in the standing position which anyone of any experience level can benefit from, the lead hand fake.
This technique is very much in contrast to traditional wrestling cultural norms, but it's utility, in my humble opinion, cannot be argued. Using the lead hand as the fake hand nearly doubles your reach, making it an effective tool in keeping eager opponents at bay as well as reacting to you (as opposed to the other way around).
